Practice strategy

Great job swimming hard and having fun at the meet last night! It was a tough loss. We’re 2-1 for the season and we are ready for the next meets. Go Tidal Waves!

When watching the meets, you can probably see how well our swimmers do. Swimming takes a lot of hard work, and time and effort to learn the techniques of each stroke. We thought we’d share Evan’s coaching strategy with you so that you can better understand what is happening at the practices.

Monday (meet day) - We don't want to overload the kids with new information on this day, instead we work on perfecting our dives and turns, maybe a 25 (or 50 for the older kids) of each stroke, and some fast finishes. Overall an easy day to prepare for the meet that night.

Tuesday - Fun swim

Wednesday - After the meet we now know what we need to work on. We split the kids up into groups either based on what strokes they competed in or what strokes just overall needed some work. This is a technique day, working on the little things like good breaststroke or butterfly kick, timing for strokes, and making sure everything is legal.

Thursday - While swimming is a lot of technique, it's also a lot of work. This is the day where we work on aerobic capacity, trying to get a lot of swimming in to prepare the kids for some of the scarier races, such as the 100 IM. This day is not so much focused on technique but anything that really sticks out will of course be corrected.

Friday - Friday Fun-day. On this day we want to do some sprints off the blocks, but make it fun. Last week we did trivia with the older kids after splitting them into teams. The goal is to have fun, but still get some work done while doing so.

-- Every day some time is set aside for kicking, since kicking is the base of the stroke and it's the key to going fast.

We are lucky to have such a talented, hard-working and responsible group of coaches. Swim team is a good for our community—not only does it teach the kids who are swimming how to work hard and be part of a team, but it provides a work experience opportunity for our older swimmers. Coaching swim team is a good learning experience and resume builder. Our kids look up to the coaches and I know a few of them are hoping to be swim team coaches someday too. Parents, thank you for supporting a great neighborhood program. A special thanks to Evan, Bailey, Lauren, Ashley and Will for teaching and leading our kids!
